School Board Regular Meeting Minutes

June 20, 2023

 

The Board of Education of Independent School District #238 met on Tuesday, June 20th, 2023 at 6:00 pm in Science Room #50.

 

Members present in person: Adkins, Weidemann, Tollefsrud, Wilder, Miller, Marquardt, Superintendent Kuphal 

Present via visible-audible technology: Livingood

Also present in person: Principal Weidemann, Aimee Lake, District Secretary Lisa Halverson, Charlene Selbee with Fillmore County Journal, Susie Munroe

Members absent: Student Representative Anna Wheat   

 

The meeting was called to order by Chair Adkins at 6:02 pm.  The Pledge of Allegiance was said.

 

Motion by Jason Marquardt, second by Dustin Tollefsrud  and carried unanimously, to approve the revised agenda.

 

Motion by Chris Miller, second by Diane Wilder and carried unanimously, to approve the May 16, 2023 minutes.

 

Consent Agenda:  Motion by Diane Wilder, second by Mark Weidemann and carried unanimously, to approve the following, with many thanks for all the donations:

  •  Congratulations to Class of 2023 and Valedictorian Jacolby Torgerson, Salutatorian Kelly McClimmon 
  • Elementary Summer School will be held M-Th July 31-August 17.  Offering transportation this year with grant funding
  • HS Summer School finished last week.
  • Good luck to the Trap team as they move on to compete at State, and to Saijal Slafter as she competes individually in the Top 100 shooters.  
  • Michelle attended training on how to evacuate the building if/when needed - will bring this information to the Crisis Team and develop a plan
 
  1. Superintendent - 
  •  A Switch Gear will be installed next week, leaving the building without power for the week.  
  •  We met the current and upcoming “Lead in Water” levels required - this report will be posted on the school website.

B.   Motion by Chris Miller, second by Jason Marquardt and carried unanimously, to approve the 2023-24 Preliminary Budget.

C.  Motion by Diane Wilder, second by Dustin Tollefsrud and carried unanimously, to approve the 2023-24 Resolution for Membership in MSHSL.

D.  Motion by Diane Wilder, second by Mark Weidemann and carried unanimously, to approve the 6-Month Periodic Review of Safe Learning Plan.

  1. Motion by Jason Marquardt, second by Chris Miller and carried unanimously, to approve the Superintendent’s Contract for 2023-24.
  2. Motion by Dustin Tollefsrud, second by Jason Marquardt with Mark Weidemann abstaining and carried unanimously, to approve the Principal’s Contract for 2023-25 including the following requests:
  • Salary increase of 3.5% for the first year, and 3% for the second year
  • $100/month VEBA increase for the 2 year contract
  • $100/month 403B increase for the 2 year contract
  • $150/month increase for additional duties in absence of Superintendent
  1. Motion by Diane Wilder, second by Mark Weidemann and carried unanimously, to approve rescheduling the August Board Meeting to August 24th, 2023 at 6:00pm.
  2. Motion by Jason Marquardt, second by Diane Wilder and carried unanimously, to approve the designation of IOWA for MDE External User Access Recertification System.  
  3. Motion by Mark Weidemann, second by Diane Wilder and carried unanimously, to approve MSBA 2023-24 Dues & Membership.
  4. Due to Legislative changes, the first reading of the Student/Parent Handbook is moved to next month - No action required.
  5. 1st Reading of 23-24 Extra-Curricular Handbook - no action required.
  6. 1st Reading of 23-24 SAC Handbook - no action required. 
  7. Motion by Diane Wilder, second by Dustin Tollefsrud and carried unanimously, to approve School District Insurance Renewal through Marsh and McLennan.  
  8. Motion by Dustin Tollefsrud, second by Mark Weidemann and carried unanimously, to approve MREA 2023-24 Dues and Membership.
  9. Motion by Diane Wilder, second by Traci Livingood and passed with roll call vote 5-2 with Adkins, Miller, Wilder, Livingood, Tollefsrud in favor and Weidemann, Marquardt opposed, to approve the 2024-25 School Calendar with late start change to every Wednesday.  
  10. Motion by Diane Wilder, second by Jason Marquardt and carried unanimously, to approve the 2023-24 Lunch and Breakfast prices with extra entrees remaining the same price as 2022-23 school year prices.
