School Board Regular Meeting Minutes

July 19, 2022

 

The Board of Education of Independent School District #238 met on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at 6:00 pm in Science Room #50.

 

Members present in person: Adkins, Marquardt, Weidemann, Tollefsrud, Wilder, Miller, Superintendent Kuphal

Members present via visible-audible technology: Livingood

Also present in person: Principal Weidemann, District Secretary Lisa Halverson, Rich Wicks, Jessica Hahn-Miller, Tamitha Peter

Members Absent: Student Representative Matthew McClimon

 

The meeting was called to order by Chair Adkins at 6:00 pm.  The Pledge of Allegiance was said.

 

Motion by Tollefsrud, second by Miller and carried unanimously, to approve the revised agenda.

 

Motion by Wilder, second by Weidemann and carried unanimously, to approve the June 21, 2022 minutes.  

 

Consent Agenda:  Motion by Tollefsrud, second by Marquardt, with Weidemann and Wilder abstaining from the vote and carried unanimously, to approve the following:  

  1. 2021-22 Budget

  3. Hire Heath Olson as Boys JV Team Basketball Coach

Facilities and Capital Outlay:  The committee will need to meet again before August.  Gary is getting information on replacing the Condensing Unit in the Media Center and incorporating this into the Band Room.  

 

Policy Committee:  Gary is working on creating a schedule to make it easier for the committee to know when policies need to be reviewed.  

Hiawatha Valley Education District:  The HVED Director, Deb, recently received her Doctorate in Education.  

 

Principal Report:  Still looking to fill the HS PE/Social Studies/Health position, MS/HS Para position, JH Football Coach, Drama Coach, and the Second Grade Teacher position.  

 

Superintendent Report:  

  • Sheriff John DeGeorge contacted all Fillmore County school Administrators to discuss school safety.  An article will be coming out in the paper soon.  
  • Gary will reach out to Mabel and Canton City Councils to schedule a joint meeting.
  • Lightning struck the school last Friday damaging an old chimney and possibly resulting in some technology issues.  Fowler and Hammer will repair the chimney.  Michelle submitted a claim to insurance. 
  • Gary will contact MSBA inviting them to join the August board meeting to explain the MSBA strategic plan process and schedule a meeting with our board members this coming Fall or Winter.  
  • M-C has three upcoming board vacancies.  Applications are due anytime between August 2nd - August 16th, along with a $2 filing fee.

  2. Motion by Wilder, second by Miller and carried unanimously, to approve the 2022-23 Extra-Curricular Handbook.
  3. Motion by Marquartdt, second by Weidemann and carried unanimously, to approve the 2022-23 SAC Handbook.  
  4. Motion by Miller, second by Weidemann and carried unanimously, to approve the Resolution Adopting ISD 238 FY24 Long-Term Facilities Maintenance Ten-Year plan.  
  5. Motion by Weidemann, second by Marquardt and carried unanimously, to approve the Resolution Establishing Dates for Filing Affidavits of Candidacy.  
  6. Motion by Weidemann, second by Wilder and carried unanimously, to approve the Agreement to Purchase Educational Services from Hiawatha Valley Education District for 2022-23.        
  7. Motion by Marquardt, second by Wilder withWeidemann abstaining and carried unanimously, to approve a $5,000 increase to Michelle Weidemann’s contract for 2022-23.  
  8. Motion by Tollefsrud, second by Weidemann withWilder, Marquardt and Miller abstaining and carried unanimously, to approve the Fall Coaches.  
  9. Motion by Weidemann, second by Miller and carried unanimously, to approve a $1/Hr increase in Non-Certified Substitute pay and a $5/Day increase in Substitute Teacher pay with an additional $10/Day after 15 nonconsecutive subbing days.  
  10. Motion by Weidemann, second by Marquardt and carried unanimously, to approve the MREA Membership renewal.
