Softball game update (5/7/24): Varsity softball game will play as scheduled today. JH game will NOT be played in SG. Their field is too wet. JV and JH will play a combo game after the Varsity game. That game will start 5-10 minutes after the Varsity game is completed. JH players should be at the field by 4:30. Varsity should be there by 3:30 like normal.

May 18, 2021
The Board of Education of Independent School District #238 met on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at 6:00 pm in the Media Center.

Members present in person: Adkins, Miller, Marquardt, Wilder, Livingood, Weidemann, Tollefsrud, Superintendent Kuphal
Also present in person:  Principal Michelle Weidemann, Business Manager Aimee Lake, District Secretary Lisa Halverson, Rich Wicks, Tyler Augedahl, Sarah Holdmeyer 
Members absent:  Student Representatives Colton Heintz-Kuderer and Matthew McClimon
 
The meeting was called to order by Chair Adkins at 6:00 pm.  The Pledge of Allegiance was said.

Agenda Changes/Additions: Motion by Marquardt, second by Livingood and carried unanimously, to approve the agenda. 

Approval of Minutes: Motion by Miller, second by Wilder and carried unanimously, to approve the April 20, 2021 minutes.  

Consent Agenda: Motion by Tollefsrud, second by Weidemann and carried unanimously, to approve the consent agenda.

Student Representative Report:  
 No report given.  The Student Representatives were absent due to baseball game in Wabasha.  
PreK-12 Principal Report:  
 Woods Class built and Art students decorated two little free libraries.  The students installed them today in Canton.  Thank you to Brock Bergey with the City of Canton for treating the kids to lunch! 
National Honor Society program was held on Sunday, followed by Scholarship awards and Bachelorette.  Almost $28,000 was handed out to the Senior scholarships.  Thank you to Louise Kleiboer for all her help with Baccalaureate!  Congratulations to all Seniors involved in these events!
HS Band and Choir concerts were held and went well.
Elementary Music program is scheduled for June 2nd.
Track & Field Day is scheduled for May 27th and is now open to anyone interested in attending.  
As of May 28th, no social distancing is required at indoor school events.  This applies to Graduation.  Masks are still required indoors.  Social distancing is still required during school days.  
Laura Vatland will be running Elementary Summer School June 7-10th and 14-17th.  HS Summer School will be June 19-23rd and 26-30th.    
Superintendent: 
JoAnn Aasum and Tanya Kidder will share a Custodial position this Summer.  Dave Arnold will continue mowing throughout the Summer. 
Per MSBA guidance, masks are no longer required at school board meetings.  
The state legislature has set a spending target of $525 million for E-12 education next year and $675 million for the following year.   
The three board member parents of seniors will present diplomas on stage at graduation.   There will be seats reserved in the front row for the rest of the board members who plan to attend.  
Gary started senior interviews today to learn more about each senior student and hear their input on the good and bad of Mabel-Canton School District.  
Referendum projects start June 7th.  Brick cleaning starts this weekend.  All windows will be installed next year.  
Asbestos was found in the gym, shop/office area.  Will revisit next month.  
Will hear more of a time line on the parking lot project next week.  

Enrollment:  Enrollment was reviewed.

Items for Action and/or Discussion:
Cooperative Sports Agreements with Lanesboro (Track and Boys Gold) and Fillmore Central (Wrestling):  Motion by Marquardt, second by Weidemann and carried unanimously, to approve the sports agreements. 
District Assessment Coordinator Stipend of $2500 for Paula Snell:  Motion by Weidemann, second by Tollefsrud and carried unanimously, to approve Paula Snell’s stipend of $2500. 
School Lunch Prices for 2021-22:  Motion by Wilder, second by Miller and carried unanimously, to approve a $.10/meal price increase for the 2021-22 school year. 
Superintendent’s Contract for 2021-22:  Motion by Livingood, second by Wilder and carried unanimously, to approve a $20/day increase and a contribution up to $2,000 for a 403B or other retirement account for Mr. Kuphal for the 2021-22 school year. 
Learning Model Update:  No change.  No action.
Staffing for 2021-22 School Year:  Motion by Wilder, second by Weidemann and carried unanimously, to approve the following changes in positions for the 2021-22 school year with an overall change in regular education FTE going from 25.58 to 25.6: 
Art reduced from .6 to .4 FTE
Reduce Choir Teacher FTE from .5 to .4
Increase Spanish Teacher FTE from .25 to .45 (shared with Spring Grove- total .8 FTE)
Science - Nelson increases from .8 to 1.0 FTE / Peter reduced from 1.0 to .8 FTE
Ag Teacher - create online classes for up to an additional $2500 max for the year.
Looking at either 2 third grade groups next year, or a ¾ combo 
Incoming 1st grade has 27 students - Mrs. Hoscheit will teach Preschool in the mornings, and help with 1st grade in the afternoons.  
Spec Ed - .6 FTE increase for Elementary Sped Teacher
Advertise for 1.0 FTE Spec Ed Para for Kindergarten
Title- increase .5 FTE for Title Para
2022-23 School Calendar:  Motion by Miller, second by Weidemann and carried unanimously, to approve the 2022-23 school calendar.
