5th Grade Update

Well, planning for this school year is like nothing I have ever done before. I just want you to know that I will do my best. We are all in this together and everyone's well-being comes first. Please, do not stress if technology does not work. I am here to work with you.

My class will be using Google Docs, a web-based data storage service offered by Google. It allows users to create and edit documents online. Your child has a G-mail account that will be used quite a bit in 5
th grade. Google Docs will allow your child to work on a writing project at school and continue to work on the assignment from home.

How much homework will I have in fifth grade?  That is a common question.  The rule of thumb is 50 minutes per night.  I will expect a minimum of 20 minutes of reading five nights a week, which we will start next week. I will have your child set-up a Google Doc to record minutes to limit the contact of paper. That leaves one with around 20 minutes to finish any math that might not get done at school.  For math, Mrs. Bergey will try to give as much time as possible to get it done in school.  I am aware that what one child can do in 10 minutes may take another child 20.  Therefore, feel free to write me a note if homework goes beyond 50 minutes and it was too much to go beyond the 50 minutes to finish.  (8-10 hours of sleep a night is important to one’s success in school.  I’d rather have your child well-rested and help him/her with their unfinished work before school or during recess.) Any science homework will be noted in the weekly letter.

A weekly letter from the fifth grade team of teachers will be sent home electronically starting next week. If you need a paper copy, please let me know. It is also a good idea to check my website (http://www.mabelcanton.k12.mn.us click on Academics→ Elementary School→ R. Sacquitne Grade 5) for letters, spelling, homework, and additional information.
