Mabel-Canton Students and Families:

Governor Tim Walz just announced this afternoon that schools will be closed March 30th-May 4th, with plans for students to return to school on May 5th.  We know that the date of May 5th could change, so until further notice, students will receive instruction via distance learning. The Distance Learning Plan will explain how instruction will be provided to our students during this time of closure, and it will be available on our website by Friday, March 27th, with instruction to start on Monday, March 30th.

In order to implement the Distance Learning Plan,  our teachers are developing instructional plans and lessons, and other staff are coordinating efforts to distribute materials that students will need at home in order to receive instruction.  Items that may need to be picked up include instructional materials provided by teachers, laptops, or items that were left in student lockers (as we are using this time to thoroughly clean all student lockers).

We are asking families to come to school on either Thursday or Friday to pick up the needed materials.  Please come to the new main office/HS gym entrance. As you pull up in your vehicle (please stay in your vehicle), we will verify through a check-off list the student(s)  for which you are picking up materials. We will bring those items to your vehicle and hand them to you.

The times available for pick-up/drive-up are as follows:

Location: Mabel-Canton School New Main Office/HS Gym office

Thursday, March 26th from 2:00pm-7:00 pm

Friday, March 27th from 7:00am-4:00pm

We will be contacting those families on Monday who have not picked up their materials, to arrange a time and place to get the items.

Thank you again for your patience and assistance.

Sincerely,

Gary Kuphal, Superintendent

Dear Students and Parents:

As you know, our school as well as the nation, is going through unprecedented times.  Let me explain what we are doing here at school to provide an education to all students should we move to Distance Learning days starting on March 30th.

All schools in Minnesota were required to close from March 18th-27th.  During that time, the Minnesota Department of Education stated that no new instruction can be provided to students.  These school closure days are for staff to develop a Distance Learning Plan that will allow students to access education materials and to receive instruction on a regular basis.

We continue to gather information from families about their technology availability. If you have not filled out the survey on-line or have not received a phone call regarding this, please call us at 507.493.5422 with this information.

Our plan is to distribute devices for students in Grades 4-12 who have no laptop/computer in the home.  They will be utilized to receive instruction on a regular basis. Grades K-3 will be receiving packets of educational materials on a regular basis.  The distribution of these items will be later this week, and you will be receiving more details about this distribution in a day or two.

Please know that we are working through this distance learning plan, and we will try our best to continue the education for all of our students.  There will be glitches, things that we thought would work, but didn’t. Bear with us, and have patience. We’re all in this together.

Sincerely,

Gary Kuphal, Superintendent

Dear Families:

This letter is to help provide additional information about your child's education.

During the eight days of school closure, March 18th-27th, no new instruction will be provided to your child as mandated by Governor Walz and the Minnesota Department of Education. These days are to be used by staff to create a distance learning plan in the event that the school closure is extended past March 27th.  Distance learning is defined by the state as “students engaging in distance learning have access to appropriate education materials and receive daily interaction with their licensed teacher(s)”. In the event that the distance learning plan is needed, it will be shared with you by March 30th.

Third quarter will end March 27th.  Progress reports will be sent out later this week to all students and their families and they will reflect third quarter grades. Students do have the opportunity to try to improve their grades by contacting their classroom teacher(s) and have until April 8th to complete any work for the third quarter.

Also, keep in mind that there are no activities or events from March 18th until further notice. This includes school age childcare (except for emergency workers as defined by Minnesota Department of Education) and parent/teacher conferences.

Sincerely,

Gary Kuphal, Superintendent

March 15, 2020

Dear Families:

Today, Governor Tim Walz and Education Commissioner Mary Cathryn Ricker announced that all Minnesota public schools will close to students starting Wednesday, March 18, 2020, with the plan to resume classes on Monday, March 30, 2020.

In order to prepare our students for this school closure and provide an opportunity to gather materials they may need, Mabel-Canton Schools will remain open tomorrow, Monday, March 16th and Tuesday, March 17th.

Starting tomorrow, Monday, March 16th, ALL before and after school activities and events are canceled until further notice.

During the school closure for students, Mabel-Canton School District will be creating plans to provide distance learning to our students should we need to close schools statewide for a longer period of time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Minnesota Department of Education is defining distance learning to mean that a student receives daily interaction with their licensed teacher(s) and appropriate educational materials. Starting March 30, 2020, per the instruction from the Minnesota Department of Education, student learning will continue for the rest of the school year.

Our educators will be giving thoughtful planning to our distance learning plan, including students receiving special education services, multilingual learners, students experiencing homelessness, and students who rely on meals served at school.

If your child/children are in need of breakfast and/or lunch during the school closure please complete the linked survey by 4:00pm tomorrow, Monday, March 16th, 2020. (Link found in your email.)

If your child/children are in need of school-age childcare, please complete the linked survey by 4:00pm tomorrow, Monday, March 16th, 2020. (Link found in your email.)

Sincerely,

Gary Kuphal, Superintendent
