Student Driver's Ed information 2025-2026

Families that would like to take the classroom portion of drivers ed with Dan Bieberdorf and Jake Dahl in the near future will have a few options to choose from. Children need to be at least 14 years old to do any of the options.
  • Online classroom program can be started whenever you get registered with Dan Bieberdorf online. Once you've paid and started the program, you can complete up to 3 hours a day at your own pace at your own house on your own device. You have 90 days to complete the 30 hours of classroom instruction. Once the 30 hours of classroom instruction are completed, the student can take the written test to get their permit as long as they are at least 15 years old and have paid for their behind the wheel program.
  • A fall 2025 "in-person" class will happen in Houston and/or Rushford. The exact days have not been decided yet, but it will happen near the end of the fall school activities and before the winter activities begin. Once the 30 hours of classroom instruction are completed, the student can take the written test to get their permit as long as they are at least 15 years old and have paid for their behind the wheel program.
  • A spring 2026 "in-person" class will happen in Rushford. Once the 30 hours of classroom instruction are completed, the student can take the written test to get their permit as long as they are at least 15 years old and have paid for their behind the wheel program.
  • Cost of the online and behind the wheel combined is $450.
  • Cost of the in-person and behind the wheel is $400.
  • Once the student has the permit, they can start driving with their parents and getting scheduled with behind the wheel sessions.
    • Shelly Anderson, a teacher at Spring Grove, is working for Turning Point Driving School from Rushford.
    • Behind the wheel consists of 3 sessions that are each 2 hours long and take place in Spring Grove, Caledonia, Harmony, Houston, Waukon, Decorah, etc.
    • Behind the wheel sessions that happen during the school year are after school when it works for students' and Shelly's schedules.  Usually those that are not in after school activities will drive after school while others are at practice.
    • Weekend sessions during the school year also happen when it works for students' and Shelly's schedules.  Weekends usually end up being for those that have after school practice.
    • Please keep in mind, 3 driving sessions need to be completed before you can take your road test. Driving appointments after November 1 will be rare. They are not the norm and students should not plan on them being available.
    • Behind the wheel sessions will start up again around the middle of March.
    • Most of the driving appointments will happen in the summer when schedules are more open.
    • In order to take your road test, you need to have completed 50 hours of driving with adults (15 of them at night), you need to be 16, have had your permit for at least 6 months, and you need to have completed 6 hours with Shelly Anderson.
